Toko Shiiki

Last week, my friend Don Werthmann invited me to review portfolios for students graduating from the photography program at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor. This was my first time being asked to review portfolios and I was prepared to say a few nice things and give a little constructive criticism when necessary - to keep it real.

I was quite impressed (and a little surprised, to be honest) by the quality of the work presented by this group of students. Don and the other photo instructors have done a great job guiding this group technically and conceptually.

Toko Shiiki, is one of the students that I met and her projects and presentation were fantastic. In addition to being very personal in its origins, her work is primarily done in-camera, with only minor digital manipulation, making each image a sort of performance. Take a moment to check out her work, especially the "Daidanen" series.
