Friday Funnies - Garfield Minus Garfield

"Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against lonliness in a quiet American suburb."

Friday Funnies - S........T..........O............ A!

A few months into hibernation, this speed feels just about right to me.

Why Do They Hate Us?

I apologize for being late to the party, but earlier this week, Colin Pantall posted this story about Esko Mannikko, Deutsche Borse Prize finalist:

"A little bit of background on Esko Mannikko and Finnish photography from a lecture given by Asko Makela in Iceland a few years back.

"Esko Männikkö is a good example of a mythical Finnish man. He does not talk much. Actually he talks quite seldom - like all the men in northern Finland. There is a story of Esko Männikkö’s exhibition opening in New York where he was present. Nan Goldin comes in and asks if they could exchange an artwork. Männikkö says slowly to her: “I hate your works. I change nothing.” He has also surprised galleries by staying in Finland and going for fishing with his silent friends instead of going to the opening of his exhibition."

Detroit rockers The Dirtbombs are apparently also hated in Scandinavia. So keep smiling Nan, you're in good company.

Enjoy!

Blowing Out the Cobwebs

It's not as bad as Alaska or Minnesota. It's not even as bad as other parts of Michigan, but this time of year, February in Detroit is downright nasty. The skies are constantly grey or white, and there's either three inches of sloppy snow on the ground or three inches of rainy muck. So my plan today was to push through the funk, blow out the cobwebs and try to get back in a groove of sorts. The goal was a modest one - just to get outside and walk around for an hour, with no direction or plan. And I don't know if I got any home runs, but I made contact, jogged around the bases and that's better than the last couple weeks.

Friday Night Funnies

It's a little late in the day, but I've always thought of stand up comedy as a Friday *night* kind of thing. Or a west coast late afternoon kind of thing. Anyway, this selection is from Paul F. Tompkins, the famous comedian.

His "Peanut Brittle" piece is the "Hot Pockets" of 2007 for me. High praise indeed. Enjoy!
